Electrical safety is paramount!
As Christmas approaches we are likely to be using our electrical appliances more than usual. From boiling the kettle to make tea for visitors, to plugging in our shiny new Christmas gadgets, December is peak electricity season. Electricity is such an integral part of our lives that it’s easy to forget how dangerous it can be. Thousands of fires, injuries and even deaths are caused every year by electrical accidents and malfunctions. Luckily, most of these are avoidable.
Here are a few tips to stay safe this Christmas.
Don’t leave phone plugged in overnight
We rely on our phones more than ever and keeping them charged seems to be a constant struggle. However, you should avoid the temptation to leave your phone charging overnight. Phones left charging for long periods of time have caused a recent spate of electrical fires across the UK.
It is especially dangerous to do this at night as you may sleep through the early stages of a fire. All phone chargers are capable of starting electrical fires, but you should be especially wary of the cheaper brands found on eBay.

Get your electrics checked
Electrics don’t last forever. Sockets and switches will degrade over time and connections and wiring may come loose. This can be extremely dangerous so it’s best to check your electrics regularly. You can do this yourself but it can be hard to know exactly what to look for.
